That being the case, this reporter headed for São Paulo last Friday for a benefit seminar promoted by Memorial Gracie Santos. The setback was Paulo Filho, who was a no-show. But there was nothing lacking at the class, as it had backup from Amaury Bitetti, MMA fighter and boxer Fabio Maldonado, and supervising teacher and world champion Marcelo Nigue. The crew from Brazilian fight TV channel Combate’s “Passando a Guarda” (“Passing guard”) was in attendance as well.

At UNIMES gymnasium in Santos, Bitetti and Nigue demonstrated some of the secrets to Jiu-Jitsu, while Maldonado answered questions about striking in MMA. World muay thai champion Cosmo Alexandre was also there, before taking off for the USA, where he should make his MMA debut.

The cost of attending was 2 kg of non-perishable food, to be donated to an institution in Santos. São Paulo’s former Secretary of Sport Walter Felman lectured as well, promising to invest in training centers in needy areas.

Nigue takes on giant with the gentle art

The black belt at the helm in Jiu-Jitsu training at Memorial Arena/Gracie Humaitá in the Brazilian city of Santos, Marcelo Nigue is getting ready for an outing reminiscent of the old-school vale-tudo challenge fights. Next Saturday in Aruba, the fighter takes on the heavier Evan Nedd.

“I’m weighing 77 kg (170 lbs) right now and my opponent is 1.97 meters (6’6”) tall, and fights in the under 94 kg (206 lbs) division,” says Nigue.

To make it out of the challenge on top, the fighter reveals his strategy in facing a much heavier opponent.

“Jiu-Jitsu. It was made for this, for the weak to overcome heavier people,” he puts simply.

Brazil’s best striker Cosmo sharpening up for MMA

The Muay Thai world champion, one of the best strikers in the World, Cosmo Alexandre is getting ready for his MMA debut, which is set to go down this coming September in the Brazilian city of Santos at an event being put together by the winner of the Big Brother Brazil reality show Marcelo Dourado and black belt Marcelo Nigue.

Cosmo is currently in the United States, where he is training alongside the likes of Rashad Evans and Gesias Cavalcante in Florida, and under two-stripe black belt Gene Simco at New York Martial Arts Gym, where Brazilian standout Glover Teixeira has trained in the past.

Once he is back in Brazil Cosmo will rely on the help of Marcelo Nigue and Amaury Bitetti in picking up his Jiu-Jitsu game.

Brazilian MMA Confederation formed

This week the “Confederação Brasileira de Mixed Martial Arts” (Brazilian MMA Confederation), the CBMMA/BR.

Two-time absolute world champion of Jiu-Jitsu Amaury Bitetti will serve as president and doctor and businessman Fernando Chacur, as vice-president, while director of Rio de Janeiro’s lawyers association, Rio Wanderley Rebello Filho, will be the legal counsel. The Confederation statute has already been published in the Rio de Janeiro law diary.

“We hope everyone will support us! Join us! We, together, will fight for the growth of organized, disciplined, professional and supervised MMA in Brazil,” says Bitetti.

Cavaca comemora finalização e arma camp para ADCC

Rodrigo Cavaca foi à boate e voltou para casa com um estrangulamento no cartel.

A luta do professor da CheckMat em Santos, vice-campeão mundial este ano, foi no dia 23, contra Roger Coelho, nas preliminares do evento de MMA Conquest Fight.

Conta, Cavaca:

“Acabei conseguindo a vitória contra o Roger por finalização aos quatro minutos de luta, com um estrangulamento de lapela. A ideia da luta casada veio do Fabio Godoy e do Bolado, donos do evento CFC, que queriam pegar dois faixas-pretas conhecidos aqui da Baixada Santista e fazer uma superluta de Jiu-Jitsu no evento deles”, comenta, deixando uma boa ideia para todos os eventos de MMA no país. Por que não uma luta de Jiu-Jitsu para abrir o show e apresentar o esporte para outros fãs, como ocorria sempre e agora caiu em desuso?

Cavaca prossegue: “Foi muito maneiro o evento, rolou na discoteca Vive La Vie, no Guarujá. Queria parabenizar os organizadores do evento e também agradecer meus amigos, familiares e patrocinadores que me ajudaram a treinar e foram assistir ao evento”.

Rodrigo não para. Agora, o treino forte é para afiar o Jiu-Jitsu dos companheiros para o ADCC 2011.

“A equipe está treinando em Santos para o ADCC de setembro, a Michelle Nicolini e o Léo Vieira já estão aqui no nosso camp, com direito à preparação física, nutricionistas e, claro, muito Jiu-Jitsu. O camp acontece até o dia 19 de setembro, quando os dois viajam para a Inglaterra para o torneio de luta agarrada”, conclui.

Brasileiro 2011: o pastor sabe lutar

Pastor evangélico radicado em Vassouras, no Rio, a fera Vitor Rocha (Arte Livre) brilhou mais uma vez ao pisar nos tatames do Tijuca Tenis Clube, para o Brasileiro de Jiu-Jitsu 2011.

Ontem, Vitor, que já foi goleiro do Fluminense e do São Paulo, vibrou muito ao conquistar o peso e o absoluto sênior 2, após vencer, com muita fé, José Andrade (Gracie Barra) no peso, e Maurileno Fortes (Heleno Maia JJ) e Marcos Diniz (Brazilian Top Team) no absoluto.

O pastor evangélico, que não deixou escapar a chance de tirar fotos com ídolos da faixa-preta, como Bruninho Malfacine e Michael Langhi, recuperava-se de uma costela fraturada, e agora quer o Internacional de Masters e Sêniors – torneio que já venceu, em 2009.

“Quando fui campeão em 2009, o prefeito de nossa cidade abriu as portas para, junto com meu mestre Neury Gomes (Art Livre), desenvolver um trabalho social com a juventude. Hoje são mais de 260 atletas inscritos no projeto. Eu luto por esses jovens que estão vendo através da arte suave uma oportunidade para suas vidas. Aliás dois desses jovens que treinam são meus filhos, o Estêvan e o João Victor”, comentou Vitor com o GRACIEMAG.com.
